Deciding between Fully Online or Blended

CHOICE OF PROGRAM TYPE

In pursuing a degree at Mapua, a student has a choice of two types of programs:

  • Fully Online program for the student who wishes “anywhere anytime” education or who totally does not wish to be constrained by geography and time in the teaching/learning activities throughout the duration of his period of study
  • Blended program for the student who wishes to have face-to-face teaching/learning activities (TLAs) in some or all of his courses.

THE FULLY ONLINE PROGRAM

For a program to be “anywhere anytime”, all teaching/learning activities (TLAs) of all courses must be asynchronous, which means that the time that the student studies the course materials is not the same as when said material was created, e.g., when he studies a powerpoint file that was created by the teacher at an earlier time. This is as opposed to synchronous in which the time the student studies the material is at the same time as when said material is being created, as in a live virtual lecture.

For all courses, the student enrolls only in asynchronous sections, or sections composed solely of asynchronous online TLAs.

The only time constraints in an online program are found in the deadlines of submission of assessment tasks and in the school academic calendar.

Mapúa's School of Information Technology offers two Fully Online undergraduate programs, BS Computer Science and BS Information Technology, and one Fully Online graduate program, Master in Information Technology.

THE BLENDED PROGRAM

There is a mix of face-to-face and online teaching/learning activities (TLAs) in the blended program.

The student may enroll in any of the three types of sections available for each course: the blended learning section, the synchronous/asynchronous section and the asynchronous section. The Blended learning section is composed of a combination of face-to-face, synchronous online and asynchronous online TLAs. The synchronous/asynchronous section is composed of a combination of synchronous and asynchronous online TLAs. It is thus a fully online section. The third, the asynchronous section, is composed solely of asynchronous online TLAs, which makes it also fully online section. All in all, the student at time of graduation would have had a mix of face-to-face and fully online TLAs, hence blended.

Mapúa's School of Information Technology offers all of its programs as Blended programs.
